Ramokgopa To Lead National Webinar On Femicide Review Methodology Pilot - 28 August

Pretoria - Minister in the Presidency for Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, Maropene Ramokgopa, will lead a national webinar on the introduction of the Femicide Review Methodology Pilot in South Africa.

The webinar will be held on Thursday, 28 August 2026, from 09:00 to 11:00, virtually. A link will be shared a day before.

It is hosted by the Department of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation (DPME) in partnership with the Pan-African Collective for Evidence (PACE).

The pilot forms part of government's efforts to strengthen evidence-informed responses to Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF).

WHAT THE PILOT IS ABOUT:

The Femicide Review Methodology draws on international best practice and is being adapted to the South African context to support learning, prevention and improved coordination across sectors.

It introduces a multi-stakeholder approach to reviewing femicide cases with the aim of:

- Identifying systemic gaps that failed victims
- Strengthening accountability across institutions
- Improving policy and institutional responses
- Using evidence to prevent future loss of life

THEME:

"Remembering Lives Lost. Building Systems That Save Lives" - to recognise lives lost to femicide while focusing on collective responsibility to strengthen systems that protect women and girls.

The webinar will bring together government, civil society, researchers, development partners and practitioners.

WHAT IT MEANS FOR THE PEOPLE OF GA-RANKUWA:

1. From Case Number To System Fix: In Ga-Rankuwa, Mabopane, Soshanguve, many families have lost women to GBVF. Often the case ends at police station or court. This methodology means every femicide case will be reviewed to ask - where did the system fail? Was protection order ignored? Was social worker referral missed? Clinic? SAPS?

2. Accountability For Local Institutions: It puts focus on Ga-Rankuwa Police Station, clinics, magistrates court, social workers. Review will show gaps in response chain - from reporting to prosecution.

3. Prevention, Not Only Reaction: If implemented correctly, lessons from reviews will inform how Thusong Centres, schools, churches and CPFs in Ga-Rankuwa detect high-risk cases before loss of life.

4. Community Role: Civil society, women's organisations, youth groups and faith-based organisations in Tshwane North will be part of the stakeholder approach. Their voices on what happens on the ground matter.

5. What To Watch: After webinar, key question for residents - will pilot be rolled out to Gauteng stations including Ga-Rankuwa? Will data be published? Will families be involved with dignity and privacy?
